Microchipping of Pets

Losing a pet can be heart breaking and searching for it can be endless. However, with Microchipping technology, pets and owners are reunited by an identification number.

A microchip is the size of a grain of rice, and it is injected under the flap skin on the back of the dog's neck. Once an animal is injected with the chip, it can be identified throughout its animal life by this one-of-a-kind number.

The micro chip identification cannot be lost, altered or intentionally removed. Each year, more than 10 million pets are lost, and according to the American Humane Association, only about 17 percent of lost dogs and two percent of lost cats ever find their owners. Nearly 20 million pets are euthanized each year because their owners cannot be located. If a pet is microchipped, there is a much greater chance that they will return to the owner safely.

Microstamping of Firearms

Today’s show is about a new technology called Microstamping of Firearms. This technology which will allow police to positively link used cartridge cases recovered at crime scenes to the firearms and criminals that fired them.

This bill, Assembly Bill 352 authored by Paul Koreta Democratic – West Hollywood, California requires semi automatic pistols to be equipped with technology capable of etching markings intended to identify the model, make and serial number of the weapon.

Every year 80,000 new semi-automatic pistols are sold in California, and within California there are 2,400 murders each year.

Police are unable to make an arrest in 45 percent of all homicides in California because police lack the evidence they need to identify suspects.

And over 60 percent of the homicides are committed with handguns with about 8,000 annual deaths and hospitalizations tied to firearms in California.
